Old man winter is blowing that cold air around, and it’s hitting just about the entire country. The biggest impact to me, from that cold air, is on my feet. With hardwood floors in most of the house, and ceramic tile in the rest of it, nothing spells relief from the cold more than an area rug
Benefits of Area Rugs
Area rugs offer comfort, even though in most cases, the reason one buys a rug is for design. Don’t get me wrong, design is extremely important, but for the purposes of this narrative, I’m all about the non-design benefits of rugs. To be fair to our rugs, they were chosen for their looks. They had to be, especially when you consider that I have area rugs on the floor, with no furniture sitting on them. I’m talking about a real rug, not a runner. In fact, the uncovered real wool rug that is on my entryway floor is likely the first thing you see when you come in my front door. So from that perspective, design is very important. It’s affecting the first impression you have on our house.
This time of year though, it’s all about keeping my feet warm. Every morning when I get up, I make a circuit of the house, turning off all of the outside lights. I make sure that the path I take, as I go from light switch to light switch, is across all possible rugs. Stepping from the hardwood or tile flooring to the area rugs is one of life’s little pleasures for me. Let me clarify one thing, because I just realized how foolish this could seem. We bought our area rugs because of the home décor factor, and not for the comfort of my feet. I would not buy area rugs for comfort alone. I mean you could just buy slippers after all!
I’d like to mention one other non-traditional benefit of an area rug. That benefit is pet safety. No laughing. I’m serious. We have a medium size dog. She’s like most any dog in the way that she gets excited when we come home. The area rugs are like little landing pads for her. She will run from one rug to another, crouch down, wag her tail, wait for me to make a move towards her, and then make a bee-line to the next rug in the house. Without the benefit of traction from the area rugs, our adorable Buckwheat would slip and slide across the floor, possibly injuring herself. Hence the pet safety factor!
Thanks for taking the time to read my little post. I am very serious about the benefits mentioned, and would also like to put in a word for SelectRugs.com, the site from where all of my area rugs were purchased. Select Rugs has free shipping, which is very important when you consider the size and weight of a rug, great pricing, and a satisfaction guarantee.
